Why donkeys? Donkeys are good for the soul. They have affectionate natures, are intelligent, friendly and make a reliable little harness or pack animal, a safe first mount for small children as well as being loveable, wonderful pets. Donkeys are also used as guardians for sheep, goats and alpacas as they protect stock from foxes and strange dogs. They also present an investment opportunity as well bred, registered miniature donkeys are in constant demand.

How to look after them? Donkeys are hardy animals but do need a minimum of 2 acres to graze, shelter from wind and sun, good quality hay, a mineral lick, fresh water and company (another donkey is ideal). They also need their feet trimming and to be de-wormed about every 3 months and should have their teeth checked by an equine dentist every year.

Price Range: Registered miniature donkeys generally range in price from $1,760 - $8,000 depending upon the breeding, conformation, colour and training of the donkey. Some exceptional breeding animals have been sold in Australia for as much as $20,000.

JOY Miniature Donkey Stud has developed a herd of outstanding American Miniature donkeys which has produced two Supreme Show Champions and winners in foal, yearling, gelding and jenny classes.

American Miniature donkeys have been imported from the USA where they are descended from donkeys imported into USA in the 1920s from Sicily and Sardinia. Currently there are about 40 of these donkeys in Australia. We are delighted to have had the opportunity to import two of these wonderful little equines and now have twelve American Miniature donkeys at JOY Miniature Donkey Stud.

Joan Young co-ordinates the 3 day Donkey Extravaganza at the Royal Canberra Show where people can learn how to look after, train and show their donkeys. All donkeys at JOY Miniature Donkey Stud are registered with the appropriate society and on-going support and a money-back guarantee is provided with every donkey sold.
